IBM Leverages MotioCI to Save Money and Improve Satisfaction in World’s Largest Cognos Environment

Dallas, Texas (BUSINESS WIRE) OCTOBER 29, 2013 -- Within a year of implementing MotioCI, the IBM Business Analytics Center of Competency has recouped hundreds of thousands of dollars in labor savings. The use of MotioCI has enabled governed self-service BI, facilitated an agile BI development process, and improved customer satisfaction. The IBM Business Analytics Center of Competency (BACC) manages IBM’s enterprise-wide business analytics environment and standardizes processes which guide adopters to efficiently deliver business analytics solutions.

The BACC oversees IBM’s internal business analytics (BA) strategic roadmap which involves centralizing its BA infrastructure, reducing implementation and operational costs, and evolving streamlined BA processes and practices. Over the past several years, the IBM BACC has consolidated hundreds of departmental BI installations into a single production Cognos platform hosted on a massively scalable private analytics cloud, named “Blue Insight.” By mid-2013, the population of Blue Insight users had grown to include over 200 globally diverse business teams comprised of over 4,000 Cognos developers, 5,000 testers, and over 400,000 named users. Blue Insight was hosting over 30,000 Cognos report specs, drawing data from over 600 different source systems, and servicing an average of 1.2 million report executions each month. As the adoption rate of the Blue Insight platform continued to accelerate, the BACC operations team found itself spending more and more time servicing administrative requests from these Cognos business teams. Frequent administrative requests involved:

IBM Leverages MotioCI in Massive Cognos Environment
  1. Content promotions- the promotion of Cognos content between environments
  2. Data recovery – the restoration of accidentally deleted Cognos content
  3. Issue resolution – helping with root cause analysis of defects in the authored BA content, etc.

After an in-depth review of commercial options for automating version control and  content deployment in Cognos environments, the IBM BACC selected MotioCI as the solution for streamlining many of the day-to-day Cognos administrative tasks that were devouring so much time from the operations team.

The key benefits the IBM BACC has gained from implementing MotioCI include:

  1. Reduced Cognos administration and support costs
  2. Balanced governance and autonomy
  3. Improved development processes by enabling Agile BI methods
  4. Governed self-service BI

“We calculated an annual number based on experience thus far and determined that MotioCI should give us savings of about $155,000 over the course of a year. We hope to be able to expand our savings upwards as we transition all of our business teams to the self-service model,” said Meleisa Holek, Manager, IBM Business Analytics Enablement Team.

In recent years, IBM has transitioned many of its internal projects to a more agile approach. Key tenets of this approach include the enablement of rapid deployment of content, a tight feedback loop with end-users, and the avoidance of IT bottlenecks. Moving to the “self-service” model has enabled IBM’s own Cognos authors to promote their Cognos content in a controlled and repeatable fashion, all the while keeping their development cycles moving at the brisk pace that they need.

“MotioCI has helped us move along the self-service roadmap and we’re growing quite rapidly. By the end of this year, most of our projects will be able to do much of the management themselves - from promotions to scheduling to security to whatever they want to do within their space," said David Kelly, Project Manager, IBM BACC.  "This will allow the operations team to focus on some of the other service areas we’re looking to expand.”

Achieving the most accurate and reliable BI implementations with Motio

"MotioCI is an active insurance policy. It is doing exactly what we wanted it to do."

—Molly Doyle, University of Colorado

"The automated testing provided by MotioCI proved invaluable. With so many reports being created and modified, and the framework model and data sources evolving, it was a huge advantage to have MotioCI proactively pointing out inconsistencies and errors."

—Tim McGuire, Ameripath...

"Our users were wowed by the functionality of MotioADF. The self-service nature of this application has reduced our number of support requests. Even a user with little or no training is able to figure the interface out and immediately become productive."

—Tim McGuire, Ameripath...

"We had one report author delete a series of reports and could not recover them without restoring the entire Cognos Content Store, thus losing all of the work completed since the last backup. We know how valuable version control is and we knew we had to have it."

—Dustin Jordan,...

"By having MotioCI we directly save 500 hours per year on hiring external specialists, so we actually reduce our out-of-pocket costs."

—Rob Bakker, Eneco

"The relationshiop with Motio is an integral part of our rapidly expanding BICC, enabling holistic change control and proactive issues resolution on our critical reporting portfolio. It has and will continue to increase end user satisfaction and reduce total cost of ownership of our...

"With the complexity of our user interface, it would have taken us twice as long as it did if we had not started with Motio's software. They worked alongside of us to provide the best user interface for the product and the end results are quite impressive."

—Sheila Higgins, Avaya...

"When our Dev content store crashed, we had just implemented MotioCI four months prior. If we had not had MotioCI, we would have been in a really, really bad situation. Right there, it paid for itself. We would have lost months worth of development effort that was only in the Dev environment...

"I know of one instance several weeks ago where a set of reports went missing off the development environment and a ticket was submitted for the BACC support team. We were able to quickly show them how you can just restore the missing reports using MotioCI and their panic was over. It's...

"After we deploy to production, if something was missed in testing, or we have an issue, we can very easily roll back to a previous version using the MotioCI tool."

- Jon Coote, CIRA

"We could not manage our environment without MotioCI. The release team is no longer the bottleneck. Processes are going smoothly."
